Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon, (1707-1788) directed the Royal Garden of Plants for nearly fifty years, from 1739 until his death: his Natural History, in 36 illustrated volumes, was a success from its publication. The animal depictions contained in the book have served as inspiration for fine arts, fashion, decoration, educational books and youth books. This is evidenced by the lotto game Le Buffon: illustrated lotto game, adorned with all species published in Paris by Appert fils et Vavasseur around 1840: the 96 animal figures present on the 24 cards that compose it were made by Nicolas Fleuri Jannin.
