By targeted fine-tuning of the lens construction, this lens has been designed to create a unique visual effect commonly known as rainbow scattered light when shooting with open aperture* and in strong backlight. By closing the aperture to F4 or smaller, the photographer can take sharper, clearer images that are not only free of rainbow scattered light, but also from ordinary scattered light and ghosting. The lens has retained the exterior design of the smc PENTAX-FA50mmF1.4, with a matte black finish and a matte black focus ring. It has no green ring - the symbolic design of the newer digital-specific PENTAX lenses - to restore the nostalgic look of a lens from the film SLR era. When used on a PENTAX camera with a 35 mm full-frame sensor, the focal length corresponds to that of a standard lens. On a PENTAX SLR camera with APS-C sensors, the focal length corresponds to that of a short telephoto lens with a focal length of 76.5 mm. The large aperture of F1.4 produces images with a very shallow depth of field. The water and oleophobic SP (Super Protect) coating on the front of the lenses makes it easy for the user to wipe off water drops or stains. The aperture construction with eight slats provides a soft, natural bokeh (blur) in the aperture range of F1.4 - F2.8. It also minimises the strip effect of spot light sources. These lenses are fully compatible with all digital and analogue SLR cameras with K-mount connector. Thanks to the aperture ring and the coupling with the camera AF system, all camera functions can be maintained.
