Description

Amazon SOFT PASTE, NO HEATING - This green honing compound is a genuinely soft paste, not a hard bar you have to warm up or force into the hide. Charge your leather strop with light, fast strokes until the surface takes on colour, then draw the blade along it to spread a thin, even film. Roughly 1-2 g covers 100 cm², which works out at about 50 to 100 applications from one 100 g tin. A hairdryer is never needed, though briefly warming the leather does help penetration if you want it. The aluminium tin has a screw lid, so what you do not use will not dry out or crumble between sharpening sessions. FEEDS THE LEATHER AS IT WORKS - Beeswax and real lanolin are blended into the formula, so every charge conditions the hide instead of drying it out. This is a leather safe formula: dry bars and hard sticks clog the pores and leave the surface stiff and brittle, while ours keeps the hide naturally supple and slightly tacky. That tack increases drag on the blade, which gives you noticeably more control over the angle and a cleaner edge. A flexible surface grips the bevel properly, so you feel it seat itself instead of skating over glazed, hardened leather. Your strop is the expensive part of the kit, and this looks after it. VERY FINE 8000 AT 0.9-1.1 MICRON - This is our chromium oxide grade and the one most people reach for on kitchen knives and straight razors, used straight after a 3000 to 6000 stone. Bacher runs four grades so you can build a real progression: red 2000 at 4-5 micron, white 5000 at 2-2.5 micron, green 8000 at 0.9-1.1 micron and black 12000 at 0.4-0.6 micron for a mirror. Every batch goes through our own micron sieve, so the abrasive content is high and the particle tolerance is unusually tight - one predictable grade, not stray coarse grains that mark the bevel. Suits kitchen and hunting knives, straight razors, chisels, gouges and wood carving tools. NOT ONLY FOR LEATHER - Once the blade work is done, the same paste charges felt, wool, sisal, canvas, linen and cotton, including buffing wheels and polishing discs run in a drill or on a bench grinder. Apply sparingly - a smear is plenty - and let the wheel or the hide do the work rather than pressing hard, because pressure rounds a bevel over instead of refining it. Beyond stainless blades you can bring high carbon steel, aluminium, copper, bronze, brass, gold and silver up to a high gloss, which makes it useful for polishing jewellery by hand with a cloth or with the round leather disc supplied in the tin. IN THE TIN, AND ONE HONEST LIMIT - You get 100 g (3.53 oz) of soft green paste in a resealable aluminium tin, plus a round leather applicator disc branded Bacher, made in Poland in the EU. The other three grades are sold separately, and a 4 x 7 g trial kit with a 5 ml leather strop balm lets you try the whole range first. The limit worth stating plainly: this is a finishing product for a blade that is already sharp. It removes the burr, refines the scratch pattern and polishes to a shine, but it will not take out chips or revive a blunt knife - a sharpening stone has to come first.
